General Questions about Girl Scouts

What are the different levels of Girl Scouts?

Daisy for girls grade K-1 / age 5-7 (2 years)
Brownie for girls grade 2-3 / age 7-9 (2 years)
Junior for girls grade 4-5 / age 9-11 (2 years)
Cadette for girls grade 6-8 / age 11-14 (3 years)
Senior for girls grade 9-10 / age 14-16 (2 years)
Ambassador for girls grade 11-12 / age 16-18 (2 years)

How are girls initially placed in a level and how do they move from one level to the next?

Being a homeschool troop we have some leniency in where girls are initially placed and when they move to the next level. But in general, the steps for moving from one level to the next are specifically set by the GS organization and detailed in the girls' current level GS handbook. Lisa will assist girls in completing the steps needed to make the move and earn their way into the next level when the time comes. Parents are welcome to discuss their daughters placement and progress with Leader Lisa.

Can you tell me about the four special Girl Scout days such as Thinking Day?

February 22nd is World Thinking Day and the birthday of both Lord and Lady Baden-Powell, the founders of Boy Scouts and Girl Guides in England. On this day Girl Scouts and Girl Guides around the world celebrate international friendship and world peace. Here in Washington each troop selects a particular country to study through activities, games, and projects. Local troops meet at a GS of SW Washington even at which they share information, food, and a "gift". One or two meetings prior to the event will be spent prepping for this special day. Read A History of World Thinking Day.

March 12th commemorates the day in 1912 when Juliette Gordon Low officially registered the organization's first 18 girl members in Savannah, Georgia. The week containing March 12th is known as Girl Scout Week.

April 22nd is GS Leader's Day honours all of our volunteers, leaders, and mentors. Girls mays may choose to show appreciation to their leader(s) on this day.

October 31st is Juliette Gordon Low's Birthday a.k.a. Founders Day as Ms. Low started the first GS troop in the U.S. in 1912. Read A Biography of Juliette Gordon Low.

Questions about Money (dues, sales, expenses, etc.)

Does the GS organization charge a fee?

Yes, GS charges an annual application fee (currently $12; payable in May) for each girl (and each adult who wishes to be an official volunteer such as the two leaders).

Does our troop have dues?

Yes, the families split the meeting facility rental cost:
9 months (Sept - May) at $30 per month = $270 total
$270 split between the 4 families = $67.50 per family per year
Note: $60 per family during 2010-2011 since we did not rent the facility until October.

What are our troops ongoing expenses and how are they paid?

Our expenses include supplies for projects and meetings, badges and awards, facility rental, and special activities costs. We do have some funds from cookie sales which are used primarily for special events and activities like camping. Donations from our generous troop parents are gratefully accepted to cover the supplies and badges!

Where can I learn about GS cookies and cookie sales?

See SW WA Cookie Sales Info | SW WA Product Sales Info | General GS Cookies FAQs

Questions about our Troop Meetings

Where and when are our troop meetings held?

On the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 10:00-11:30 at:
Battle Ground Community Center
912 East Main Street
Battle Ground WA 98604
360-342-5380

Are the girls expected to bring anything to the meetings?

Girls should bring thier GS handbooks to every troop meeting. They may wear their uniform sash/vest if desired. If other items are required Leader Lisa will so state in the meeting reminder email.

Must parents stay for the meeting? May they stay?

Parents are welcome to stay during the meeting or drop-off their girl(s) and leave. The two troop leaders do stay for the entire meeting. Of course please don't leave your daughter at the site until at least one leader has arrived.

Do Girl Scouts meet during the summer months?

Officially, no. The last official meeting is at the end of May just prior to the Court of Awards end-of-year ceremony. But our troop leaders feel it is important to continue to meet at least monthly during the summer for a troop outing, event, service project, field trip, or camping trip to take advantage of summer weather and activities, and to promote ongoing friendships and connections.

Questions about Earning GS Badges

Must girls have a GS handbook and badge book?

Girls should have the appropriate level handbook and bring it to every meeting because girls complete pages in their handbooks at some meetings.

It is also helpful to have the appropriate level badge book so that your daughter can read about the badge activities they are working on, complete activities at home as needed, and provide input as to which badges on which they would like to work.

Where can I find a list of the badges and awards available?

If possible, purchase a badge book for your level. Otherwise see Brownie | Junior | Cadette/Senior | Adult for a list of the badges and awards available. You can track the badges you have earned on these (MS Word doc) sheets: Brownie | Junior | Cadette/Senior.

How many activities must be completed to earn a badge?

That depends on the level. The front of each badge book details the requirements, but briefly:

  • To earn a Brownie Try-It girls must complete 4 activities towards that badge.
  • To earn a Junior badge girls must complete 6 activities towards that badge.
  • To earn a Cadette Interest Project badge girls must complete a total of 7 activities: 2 skill builders, 1 technology, 1 service project, 1 career exploration, and 2 activities from any category.

If a girl misses a meeting can she still earn the badge worked on at that meeting?

Yes, but the girl must work on the activities as homework. Contact Lisa for "make-up" homework details and be sure to let Lisa know when the girl has completed the homework projects.

Can girls work on badges on their own or are they restricted to the activities the troop does together?

YES! Certainly girls can work on badges on their own. Parents - please let Lisa know when your daughter completes an activity toward a badge so that she can maintain accurate records and assure that girls get the badges that they have earned. If you buy a badge that your daughter completed on her own please let Lisa know that too so we don't duplicate purchases.

Can girls work on badges during the summer?

YES! We will work on some activities toward badges/awards as a troop and you may work on more activities toward badges on your own.

Questions about the GS Uniform (including Badge Placement)

Must girls have a GS uniform?

Not a complete uniform, but they do need a sash or vest for their level on which to display their badges, pins, and awards.

Who buys the insignia (e.g., badges) and uniform?

The troop buys the badges that the girls earn by working on as a troop. Parents are responsible to purchase the sash/vest and basic insignia (e.g. Western Washington council patch, troop numbers 40249, flag if desired, etc.).

Where are insignia supposed to be placed on the girls sash or vest?

See Brownie | Junior | Cadette/Senior | Adult for uniform insignia placement.
